      Money ... THe only reason he is getting away with it, is because the law makers are too afraid of losing their jobs, and their pensions to do anything of consequence.

      People think the popular vote counts in this country. But his election proves that is not true. THe Electoral College put him in office, and the Electors can obviously be bought. I still don't believe Russia had nothing to do with it. At the very least they provided the funds to buy the electors.

      He even said on National TV that he could shoot someone on 5th Ave in New York and never lose any voters. well now he is proving it. He is allowing, if not actively trying to let people die of this and doing as little as possible to help. Even taking steps to hinder. Even Trump supporters falling ill anddying won't turn against him. It's like a cult of brain washed lemmings.

      In a word its Republicans. The only true value conservative/Republicans have ever had is to win at all costs. And not for money, although that is their reward, but for what Friedrich Nietzsche calls will to power. Which means they are willing to put up with anything no matter how criminal, destructive, dangerous or insane just so they can have power over those weaker than than are i.e. "own the libs."

      And we see Nietzsche is right. That is danger, and hazard, and casting dice for death.

    I do hope the Germans keep up their social distancing because we have the R0 decreasing here in Holland and we have been working close with the Germans!

    It is the federal design of the German states that leaves this decision out of Merkel's hands!

    The Germans like to summer on the Dutch beaches.

    On her show last night Rachel Maddow did an excellent comparison to how Merkel and Germany handled COVID 19 compared to Trump and the US. And why the US has more cases of COVID 19 than the next 5 countries combined and has passed the 50,000 dead mark. Maddow also pointed out one of the biggest factors was Merkel from the beginning told the Germans the truth including 70% of Germans will probably become infected.

    And I also just read a Foreign Policy morning brief about Merkel trying to get out in front of relaxing some restrictions warning people "we are still at the beginning of this crisis and must maintain social distancing and other safeguards."

    That is a real leader.

    Wasn’t Merkel one of those complicit in helping to cover up the mass sexual assaults in Germany on New Years a few years back.

    It’s hard to think that she has anyone’s best interests in mind.

    There are 5 states in the US that are practicing virtually no state enforced social distancing. It would seem that they should have a huge eruption of cases comparatively to states that do enforce vigorously. But they do not. Perhaps infection rates are going down because the virus has a natural course.

      My friend in Texas is telling me that Harris County is forcing people to wear masks in public or face a 1000 dollar fine in spite of the fact that masks are presently unavailable there!!!

      This is government out of control and drunk on power!

      Do you know how time works? Just because it's not widespread there yet doesn't mean it won't be. Britain and Sweden didn't practice social distancing in the very early stages and that backfired immensely.

      The U.K. came into the orbit of this virus later than other places so of course the cases increased logarithmically at the beginning because that is the nature of microbial growth. It is leveling off now as that is also the nature of microbial growth when faced with both the human immune system and herd immunity.

      But I agree with you that anything could happen but we simply can not plan on every contingency. It’s just a matter of time before a planet killing asteroid takes us out or a million other things.

      I for one am terror fatigued.

      Bottom line is that we cannot cripple the world economy for that much longer. People need to eat and be sheltered and governments need tax revenue!

    Ok but people are quoting total numbers. On a per capita basis the US seems to be on par with other countries which tells me that this virus is just going to do what it is going to do...everywhere regardless of how much legislation we pass on it.

    China has had its virus cycle and it seems to me that the numbers for Germany and the US are about the same assuming that these numbers you present are correct. Also Germany was exposed to this much earlier so it is reasonable to assume that its cycle is older and should reasonably expect the cases to go down as will happen in the US

      China because of it’s large huddled population probably exposed more people than it was able to control. Herd immunity as practiced in the Netherlands was not the goal but the eventuality of it’s inability to effectively sequester people especially early in the outbreak.

      But then China lies about everything so who knows what the real numbers are there.

      Germany was much closer to the epicenter in Europe. And hence more exposed to people carrying the virus which is probably a good thing as the more people exposed the faster the acquired immunity.

      The US did not have anywhere near this level of free travel so the initial cases were isolated.

      Look at the wave. Always moving west so now it will likely live out its cycle in North America then likely recede in epidemiology text books.

      The five states in the States and the countries in Europe that don’t practice enforced social distancing are not showing statistically significant differences in acquisition or death.

      So we are gutting the economy for nothing!

      But there is no sense arguing with a true believer such as yourself.

      I will concern myself with how to shelter and feed my family and watch this virus wax and wane. I will let you fret over this latest media sensation.

      But if you are concerned about even larger numbers of preventable deaths then give to charities that help prevent things like malaria and TB in Africa because governmental organizations don’t seem to give a shit about those people.

      Or give to research facilities that are trying to conquer cancer and cardiovascular disease if you are only concerned about your own people. Because one of the two is going to kill you and at the present rate it is more likely to be cancer.

      Watching three people in my life die in excruciating pain from cancer taught me that is the true nightmare not this disease that I was continually exposed to.
